The Affairs of Sherlock Holmes

Many modern authors have attempted to recapture the mood of gaslit London and the mystique of Conan Doyle’s adventures of Sherlock Holmes by writing "new" Holmes stories; yet these attempts frequently fail to capture the original flavor of the Conan Doyle tales because modern writers simply don’t think or speak like Victorians. Conan Doyle's contemporaries wrote characters of their own invention; nevertheless they sound more like Conan Doyle than do any of his deliberate modern imitators. Unlike today’s authors, Sax Rohmer wrote his stories at the time Conan Doyle was at the peak of his popularity; and there is a ring of authenticity in Rohmer’s narratives that modern imitators are lacking. The editor of The Affairs of Sherlock Holmes has carefully edited some of Rohmer’s best mystery tales into Sherlock Holmes pastiches.

The Apocalypse sucks!

READY FOR SOMETHING NEW?

Airship 27 Productions is thrilled to be announcing the release of their latest New Pulp title, THE APOCALYPSE SUCKS by Peggy Chambers.

Sandra and Molly were two typical office workers enjoying their lives which consisted primarily of going to work, shopping and looking for cute guys.  Then their world came to a disastrous end brought about by a fast acting, airborne virus that decimated the majority of the world’s population.

Now the girls live in the abandoned office building in which they once worked surrounded by a new and dangerous landscape; one where mutated animals roam the streets and giant birds soar through the empty skies; where frightening humanoid bat creatures have appeared to challenge humans for supremacy of the earth.

What are two attractive, intelligent, single girls suppose to do now…other than merely hunt for food and try to stay alive?  Well, there are still malls, albeit much less crowded, and though rare, a few cute guys still out there.  So even if the apocalypse sucks, Sandra and Molly are not about to let it cramp their style.

“We are always looking for the new and innovative in pulp fiction,” says Airship 27 Productions Managing Editor, Ron Fortier.  “When Peggy sent me a letter of inquiry detailing the plot outline, I knew I had to read it to see if it was as much fun as her description led me to believe.”  Fortier was delighted with the finished manuscript and immediately accepted it for publication as something truly original in New Pulp today.

Writer Peggy Chambers offers up a truly unique, twisty adventure with two of the most likeable heroines you’ll ever meet.  With a stunning cover by Pulp Factory Award Nominated artist Andy Fish and superb interior illustrations by Zachary Brunner,  “The Apocalypse Sucks,” is a pulp mash-up readers are sure to enjoy from cover to cover.

Your Daily Ralph~Review of Bad Times 2: Blood Red Tide

Review of ‘Bad Times 2:
Blood Red Tide’
 By Chuck Dixon

Very simple, if you love action adventure men’s fiction, then this series is a ‘Must Buy’. This is the second book in the series about time traveling Ex-Army Rangers and their scientist friends. I can’t say enough good things about these books. I sat down and read approximately 60% of the book in one sitting today, finishing it off. It was a great book.

Don't be mistaken, this is as much sci-fi as it is action/adventure.

This time Dwayne Roenbach and Carolyn Tauber find themselves stranded somewhen around 230 B.C. As Dwayne says, he’s playing ‘Conan’ here. This is one cool series of books especially with all the time traveling and intrigue that’s going on. It’s all very manly stuff with tons of action. It’s just a lot of fun.

If you liked book series like ‘The Destroyer’ or ‘The Executioner’ you’re going to like this series, a lot.

Wow, is this good. I genuinely cannot wait for the next one to come out.

Your Daily Ralph! A Review of The New Adventures of Foster Fade- the Criminal Spectacularist.

A New Review of The New Adventures of Foster Fade the Criminal Spectacularist.

Having just finished this new anthology in Pro-Se’s catalogue of pulp characters brought back to life for a new audience I was driven to create a new review for this heretofore unknown character to me.

You see, I had never heard of Foster Fade before. It turns out he is a Lester Dent (Doc Savage’s creator) creation.

Knowing absolutely zero about the character I went in and read the book from cover to cover. It was an interesting character in that he was so far removed from a Doc Savage type of hero as to be a polar opposite. The only thing they had in common is that both were brilliant men who designed and built devices years ahead of anyone else. Otherwise Fade was a thin, gangly type with an acerbic personality. I found him at times to be extremely annoying myself. But in other stories to be fairly interesting. Fade has a gorgeous female reporter who works with him chronicling his exploits for the newspaper they both work for. Her name is Dinamenta Stevens or as he refers to her ‘Din’. She travels with him to crime scenes where she takes pictures and he bounces theories off of her.

Most of the stories in this collection were excellent and could be very easily enjoyed, even if like me, you knew nothing about the character.

Fade is a criminologist employed by the newspaper so the police have a love/hate relationship with him. He has no friends really on either side of the law, which is kind of unique, because he’s not a vigilante. What he is, is a pompous ass at times who likes to overshadow the police with his brilliance.

But the police realize he’s the best at what he does and do begrudgingly work with him, most of the time because they have no choice one way or another.

In Dead man’s guns by Adam Lance Garcia, Fade is taunted by a delivery of guns to his office which turn out being murder weapons used sometimes only hours before.

The Cider King Murder by Derrick Ferguson is a tale of a man who had a hidden past that finally caught up to him.

The Voodoo death by Aubrey Stevens is about what appears to be voodoo murders in the city by an ancient evil spirit whose mere name is used to frighten children and adults alike.

The Pied Piper of Harlem by David White concerns two men who terrorize the city in a terrible and horrific manner. (My favorite of the book, BTW)

Grudge Match by H. David Blalock is the story of someone who feels Foster Fade outshined him in his work and now seeks revenge by implicating Fade himself in ongoing horrific crimes.

The Black Rock Conspiracy again by Adam Lance Garcia is about a train trip that turns decidedly deadly.

All in all a very enjoyable anthology. I liked it even though I knew nothing of this character at all. Give it a whirl, it’s a fun book.

Your Daily Ralph~My Publish America Story

My Publish America Story

I’ve been threatening to write this for the past few months and decided, based on a post I saw today on Indies Unlimited to do so.

Back in 2004 I had the idea to write a book on my favorite hobby, motorcycling. At the time I had been writing articles for various motorcycle magazines for several years and had a solid background as sport touring rider, with an emphasis on safety. I shopped the book first to a company called White Horse press, which is a motorcycle book publisher who told me they had too many safety and how to books. How about if I wrote one on maintenance? I said no thank you.

By happenstance I found a friends sister had a book published by this company I had never heard of called Publish America. I asked them if they would be interested and they jumped at the idea. They send me a dollar stipend to show that we had a binding contract. They asked me to finish it in four months, which I did. I handed them the manuscript, and they edited it. All at no cost to me. They never asked for a dime. I received the book back twice during edits and finally approved the version they finished editing. A couple of months later I received two copies in the mail. The book was available on Amazon and B&N and supposedly other places as well. They priced it at $19.95 which I thought was rather high, but it was what it was. I received a measly $70 check from them after the first years half had ended. The second half of the year amounted to about the same. While I was not happy with them, I wasn’t that upset because I figured it was a tough market and it would eventually come into its own. Also somewhere along the way they raised the already steep price to $24.95.

Fast forward to 2011. I got hurt at work and ended up being partially disabled. I decided to finish up a novel I had started some years earlier and never got around to completing. That would go on to become ‘Redemption of the Sorcerer, The Crystalon Saga, Book One.’ I figured what the heck; I’d give PA a try again. I was still getting small checks form them twice a year, maybe something more mainstream would sell better and they did edit my first book (Help! They’re All Out to Get Me! The Motorcyclists Guide to Surviving the Everyday World.) very nicely.

I sent my proposal to them, and never heard from them. I figured they weren’t interested. But several months later I received a phone call from them saying that they were and their email must have ended up in my spam folder. I put it all up to crossed wires and sent them the manuscript.

This time I had a totally different experience. They took my book and did no edits on it at all. Not a one. They did not offer any editing services. They put a disclaimer in the front saying that the book was published as printed to preserve the integrity of the writers work. The book was a mess. They also charged, get this, twenty nine dollars and ninety five cents per copy! Who was going to buy a thirty dollar book? Some good friends did, which I felt terrible about.

Then I began getting different offers from them in my email sometimes three of them per day. Every one of them was looking for money. A hundred dollars here, fifty dollars there etc. ‘Let us send your book to Hollywood! Only fifty dollars!’ Or, ‘Send your book to Europe to the great book show in Germany, only a hundred dollars.’

At this point I decided to buy the rights back, which still cost me a hundred bucks but it was the best hundred dollars I could have spent. I started researching create space and KDP as well as what I had to do to get the book out there on my own. I found a great editor in Deborah Richardson of DRE&MS who had edited some books by authors I had actually heard of. Next I had to find a cover artist. I looked at what others had done and ended up going to a site called ninetyninedesigns.com where I had a cover contest done. Several artists placed their covers up on the site and I picked the one I wanted. I ended up using that same artist for all my covers so far.

It’s not cheap to self-produce a quality book, but in the end you get complete control of what is done and how it turns out.

So the bottom line is stay away from Publish America or whatever the heck they are calling themselves today (America Star Books, I just looked.) they are a rip off. There’s a reason why they had a bad reputation. Like I said in the beginning they seemed to be a different company than what they morphed into a few years back. Back in 2004 the experience I had with them was not bad, it just degenerated over time to the mess it is now. Stay away, there are plenty of small press publishers out there who will do it all for you if you’re not willing or don’t have the time or wherewithal to make it work for yourself.

Your Daily Ralph- A Review of Doc Savage-the Phantom Lagoon

Review of Doc Savage: The Phantom Lagoon

Being that I’m a HUGE Doc Savage fan, stretching back to at least 1968, when I realized that Will Murray had once again taken up the torch and was writing new Doc Savage novels, I was overjoyed. Now this past year we have seen three fantastic new ‘Wild Adventures of Doc Savage’ by Will Murray (Writing as Kenneth Robeson). The most recent to be released is entitled ‘The Phantom Lagoon’.

This was a great fast moving story wherein Doc and crew (Monk, Ham and Long Tom, along with Doc’s adventurous cousin Pat begin a battle in New York that stretched down to a mysterious island in the Caribbean involving two women of dubious background, a mysterious Count, green gilled mermen, and a secret plan by the enemy to cripple America before the start of World War II.

As with previous Doc stories by Will we get plenty of action, some cool gadgets, and lots of other great stuff to hold our attention along the way. The best part about these new books is that they flawlessly read like Doc Savage novels of old. This novel addressed one of the only problems I had with the series up until now, and that was length. I found a few of the previous volumes to be slightly too long. The original Doc stories as published by Bantam were all only 140 or so pages in length. Some of the new Wild Adventures were twice that. But this one seemed to be a bit shorter. If it was, that was a move in the right direction, as the story seemed more compact and streamlined. One of the best features of this newest novel was that Doc’s men were not captured and used as bait against Doc, which has been done before. Yes, Pat was captured and taken against her will, but I can accept that more than Monk and Ham being constantly beaten up by thugs.

All in all this was a fantastic adventure and was great fun to read. These Doc Savage books are definitely among my favorite series to read, and I look forward to whatever new ones Will has on the drawing table.

Five stars and a great read. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
